Do you know anyone who plays poker for a living?

Poker is different than most other things in gambling. You are not playing against the house and you are not mathematically guaranteed to lose. While the luck of the draw is huge skill is a definite factor.

My son is in college. He is a straight A student and smart with math. He has got into playing poker. He has spent countless hours studying the game and the statistics involved. He worked all last summer and saved up $2,300 from his summer job. He has been playing at various casinos in Oklahoma and card houses across the state and in the last 8 weeks he has turned his $2,300 into 80k. This was not one big windfall just a cumulative daily grind. When he was home for thanksgiving he went to the card houses here and over six days was up 8k. I bet he spent ten hours a day there playing.

I am not a gambler and not too thrilled about this but he definitely has a knack for it and I feel like it would be wrong of me to try and persuade him otherwise. For every one that makes it there are probably 100 that don’t but some people make a really great living playing poker and I think he might have that potential. He is talking about dropping out of school and playing full time. On one hand I think that is incredibly stupid but on the other he just made more in two months than he would would make in a year fresh out of college.

If he’s serious about pursuing it, maybe suggest he keeps it balanced for now—like sticking with school and poker together for a bit longer. That way, he keeps his options open in case he wants to shift gears down the road. Poker can be unpredictable, and having a fallback plan never hurts.
On a related note, I’ve come across other forms of gambling that are more casual, like *****. Well, it’s a different vibe altogether but can be fun for someone who enjoys the gaming side without the grind.
