Don't know if any of you are frequent users of hotels or not but figured I'd toss out a question, just in case.
How much of a discount can you normally get at a hotel just by asking nicely?
Lemme fill in some details, maybe they'd be relevant.
There is a hotel (Doubletree by Hilton) that is about an hour drive from where I live. They have a nice bar / restaurant area and a couple of times a month, they do a "jazz jam". Just so happens, I'm into jazz and have been there before, played a little with them. It's kinda fun, no pressure, just jammin' for a while. But it's usually pushin' later into the evening before it's all over and since the hotel is right there, it might be nice to just spend the night and come on home in the morning. Thing of it is, the regular room rates start at around $135/night. OUCH! And that does not include breakfast, that would be another $30 or so for both of us (me and my wife). If it matters, I saw one of the "discount hotel" websites that listed the same room for $117, no breakfast. And I know the hotel wouldn't be collecting that whole $117 if I booked for that.
So I kinda wondered whether there might be some room to bargain a bit, especially since there is a very good chance I'll be back for the next jazz jam... and the next, and the next.
There is absolutely no reason I couldn't just drive home afterward. I did that last time. But it would be nice to relax afterward, have a little drink at the bar, and have a nice night's sleep before heading home.
Definitely not a need. But something we might enjoy from time to time. At $135/night, plus all of the taxes n fees, it ain't happenin'. If the price were discounted, though, maybe. (Also for reference, the hotel directly across the street (Hampton, I think) is under $100 and includes breakfast.)
Anyway, curious what any of you might think. It's definitely not a big deal. And I know some would probably think it's a big waste of money. Maybe it is. Would definitely be nice to waste a little less of it, though. Any thought, I'm glad to read. Thanks!

Well people have a fit when they hear how much money I spend a month on the candy I hand out. It's just a matter of perspective. If it's important and your bills are being paid I don't see a problem.
I will be honest I have not stayed at a lot of hotels. I booked the Casa Del Mar in Galveston online a few times including for my honeymoon. Then my husband and I liked staying at the Super 8 in Galveston for about half the price. It is very near the Waffle House, a grocery store, and a Walmart, unlike the fancy hotels they actually had a fridge and microwave in he unit. We always just paid whatever, my husband would call and ask for something on the first floor facing away from the street.
