MS Office alternative

In other posts I have mentioned FreeOffice and its paid big brother, SoftMaker Office, as being viable alternates for Microsoft Office. And nothing about that has changed; MS Office remains expensive, and FreeOffice remains free. Both allow exports to PDF, and neither allows exports to EPUB.

However, the paid versions of SoftMaker Office [Edit: Only the Professional version of SoftMaker Office, not the Standard version] DO export directly to EPUB , and with fewer errors than the EPUB export function in LibreOffice Writer. For anyone who might be tempted to try SoftMaker Office but who doesn't want to spend $99 or $129 (although it's valid for up to five computers, not all of us need five computers), here's an alternative to the alternative:

I don't know why this exists, but SoftMaker is a German company, and there's another German software company that also sells a licensed version of SoftMaker Office under their own name. I have confirmation from SoftMaker that this other version, Ashampoo Office, is a rebranded version of SoftMaker Office, but they are a bit coy about whether there are differences. It seems certain that the Ashampoo version is the Standard ($99) version of SoftMaker Office, not the ($129) Professional version. My sense is that it's probably one version out of date, so since SoftMaker Office is now at version 2024, I suspect Ashampoo Office 9 is actually SoftMaker Office 2021 Standard. Which is a pretty darned solid word processor, and you also get equivalents to Excel and Powerpoint in the package.

I'm posting this now to alert you that Ashampoo currently has Ashampoo Office 9 on sale for 72% off the list price. The sale price is $27.50 and, like SoftMaker Office, that's good for up to five computers. BUT ... unlike SoftMaker, Ashampoo Office 9 is only available for Windows.

I've been exploring alternatives to ***** lately, and it's fascinating how many robust options are out there now. Personally, I've been using LibreOffice for a while, and it's been pretty solid for my needs—plus, you can't beat the price tag (free is always a win!).

But I get it, sometimes the familiarity of Microsoft Office can't be replaced, especially if you're deep into its ecosystem. The 2021 version seems to have some cool new features, but I wonder if it's worth the upgrade for everyone. Has anyone here tried it out yet?
