In the post-World War II era, Matt Busby was appointed artistic director in 1945. Busby revolutionized the club by focusing on youth development and attacking football. Under his leadership, Manchester United won the league title in 1952, 1956 and 1957. The Busby Babes, a team made up largely of players developed through the club's youth system, embody Busby's vision.
The tragedy occurred on February 6, 1958, when a plane carrying the team crashed while returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade. The Munich plane crash killed 23 people, including eight players. The tragedy destroyed the club, but Busby, who survived the accident, rebuilt the team. By 1963, United had won the FA Cup, and in 1965 and 1967 they won two more league titles. *****
