Preface This thread is to maximize, if you are aiming for "sub-par" or "mediocre" or "convenient" or "macro one key mashing", this thread is not the correct place to be. The information here is not solely my own, not even close. There is no rotation. THERE IS NO ROTATION to Shadow Priest in regards to maximizing DPS. A set rotation is used for trading DPS for convenience, otherwise known as "facerolling" (much better results if you are another class, facerolling as an spriest is not a great idea). Words you should know: MB - Mind Blast MS - Mind Sear VT - Vampiric Touch VE - Vampiric Embrace MF - Mind Flay MF2 - Mind Flay 2 ticks instead of 3 ticks (also known as clipping) DP - Devouring Plague SW ![]() DoT - Damage over Time: VT, DP, SW ![]() GCD - Global Cool Down DPEt - Damage per time to execute P&S - Pain and Suffering, a talent that refreshes the SW ![]() 2. Basic Information -Get a DoT timer to see the EXACT expiration of your DoT and one that tracks DoT's on multiple targets. If your DoT timer does not include tenths of a second, dump it and get a new one (there is no "best", the "best" is the one that presents the information to result in the highest DoT uptime for YOUR shadow priest). -Get a cast bar that includes estimated latency within the cast, then learn how to use it. You can combat and win against the lag beast. -Get a very recognizable cooldown tracker. -Get a mod to notify you when Inner Fire expires (if you need) -Addon Examples: Quartz(Castbar), EventHorizon(Spell actions), ClassTimer(DoT timer), CooldownCount(Cooldown Timer) Shadow Weaving: Stacks are on you, the player, as a buff; they are not stacks on the target. Thus you can "build up stacks" and switch targets without worry of loosing this buff. Only time and death can remove this buff from you. VE does not create a stack. MF and MS create one stack "per tick" during the channel, instead of per cast. All other shadow damage dealing spells create one stack per the spell landing. Flask of the Frost Wyrm should be up at all times. Fish Feast, Shoveltusk, or it's fish equivalent should be up at all times. Is your inner fire on you? Do NOT clip DOT's! VT and DP are the only two to worry about, before it used to only be VT. DP no longer has a cooldown, so clipping it's last tick is possible. Here's why clipping is evil: VT is placed on the target at 1:03, at 1:06 will be it's first tick with the second, thrid, etc. until the 5th and final tick is at 1:18. You should begin casting at 1:16.5 (zero haste) to refresh it, but got trigger happy and cast at 1:16.3. Here's what happens: 1:03 VT lands 1:06 VT ticks 1 1:09 VT ticks 2 1:12 VT ticks 3 1:15 VT ticks 4 1:16.3 VT begins cast 1:17.8 new VT lands 1:18 ..... (nothing happens... where's my tick? IT WAS CLIPPED) 1:20.8 new VT ticks 1 You clipped and 5.8 seconds went by between VT ticks, because you cancelled the fifth and final tick. This is bad. As in not good. This lowers DPS substantially. 3.3: This lowers DPS even more now than it did in 3.2. Be very careful not to clip DoT's. When should I recast SW ![]() Details can be found here. 3. Openers Open on the boss with an opener (hence the name), which one is really not all that important in overall damage done. Do not waste any time, as soon as one cast finishes you should be into the next one for the entire fight. If at any time you are standing still while not casting, you should investigate healing as a career choice and hope another healer in the raid can carry you. REMEMBER, after the opener is cast, there is no "rotation" or "ordering" of spell casting, we are a class that uses a "priority" based system that flows on the dependancy of DoT time remaining and cooldowns. An opener should accomplish the following: 1. Open with Misery (VT, SW ![]() 2. Attempt to prolong conflict (conflict is when VT requires refresh and/or DP requires refresh and/or MB's cooldown expires at the same time) 3. Begin the highest DPEt cooldowns and DoT timers as soon as possible. 4. Begin replenishment as soon as possible Example Openers: Stand still start, raid mate's debuffs and procs happen quickly: VT-DP-MB-MF-SW ![]() Stand still start, raid mate's debuffs and procs happen slowly: SW ![]() ![]() Runing in and/or raid mate's debuffs and procs happen slowly: SW ![]() ![]() ![]() *SW ![]() ![]() 4. "The Rotation" 3.3 Our "spell rotation" is simple in theory, but difficult in practice. Refresh VT and DP as close to perfect as one can get without clipping the last tick and cast "fillers" between. 1. Refresh DP after it expires, not before. DO NOT CLIP, better late than early. 2. Refresh VT when one Global Cool Down worth of seconds are remaining on it's DOT. DO NOT CLIP, better late than early. The accurate time will depend on your hasted VT cast time, figure this out before the fight while raid-buffed. 3. Cast MB when it's cooldown expires. 4. If all dots are in good order and MB cooldown is far enough away: Mind Flay. Priority Cast-all other gear configs: DP-VT-MB-MF 3.3When should I drop MB from my spell selections AFTER acquiring the 4 piece Tier 10 bonus reducing base MF cast time by 0.51 seconds to a base cast time of 2.49 seconds? haste% = ((haste on gear / 32.79) + 8.15) / 100 MBcast = 1.5 / (1 + haste%) MFcast = 2.49 / (1 + haste%) Code: x=((1020*(MFcast+delay))-(679.14*(MBcast+delay)))/((1.0240807*(MBcast+delay))-(0.492775*(MFcast+delay))) When x is a number that is lower than your spellpower standing before a boss, raid buffed, before combat begins, then you really should begin considering the removal of MB from your spell casting for maximum DPS. This will change the priority casting list to DP-VT-MF. **delay in seconds: If you are uncomfortable with spell selections or sometimes find yourself saying "aww crap, VT isn't up, how long has it been!", then this "delay" should be near double the latency read in game. For those who truly believe a large bronze statue should be created in dedication to your skills, try adding 10% to your latency for a "delay" time. For reference: Simulationcraft and Rawr use between 0.140 and 0.225 seconds as delay time*** Alternates to the "majority" priority list and reasons why: 4pT10 at roughly 4,000 spellpower (confirm with Simulationcraft, make sure to uncheck the Heroism/Bloodlust buff) will begin the area where it is a waste of time for damage done to cast MB in an environment where your Replenishment is not needed: DP-VT-MF DP > VT? Yes, but without a Death Knight's Crypt Fever, this MAY NOT BE TRUE. If you do not raid with a DK or your DK is not applying Crypt Fever, double check in Simulationcraft and make sure to uncheck the debuff "Disease Damage". Read the results and prioritize the one with the highest DPEt listed. When should I use SW ![]() SW ![]() ![]() If you have a set rotation of spells or use a macro to create a set rotation, your dps can be increased by doing it manually. However, your dps can also decrease if you screw it up. If you do use a macro, ensure you learn and understand how and why it works. Every now and again: take a trip to the training dummy and try to 'beat the macro'. You may be surprised... Knowing your GCD with all raid buffs and haste gear is a great way to maximize DPS. For once you know your GCD, you know exactly how many seconds away from VT expiring you should begin your cast (it's one GCD). You know exactly if you can fit a MF2 (2 ticks of MF) instead of a SW ![]() Instants (DP, VE, SW ![]() ![]() MB cast = 1 GCD VT cast = 1 GCD Non 4pT10 bonus MF = 2 GCD Non 4pT10 bonus MF2 (2 ticks of MF) = 1.333~ GCD 4pT10 bonus MF = 1.666~ GCD 4pT10 bonus MF2 (2 ticks of MF) = 1.111~ GCD 5. Raiding Information Is your inner fire on you? Food buff? Flask? Are you in Shadowform? Learn the fight: learn it's phases, stages, and length to: OPTIMIZE your Shadowfiend depending on this information. Do not wait for Bloodlust/Heroism. Do not wait to be out of mana. Send the fiend out as many times as possible in the fight without sending it into impending death. A 4+ minute fight should have 30+ swings from your Shadowfiend. A 6+ minute fight should have 40+ swings... etc. View the Shadowfiend as a 4th DoT, a damage producing ability, not a mana regen. OPTIMIZE your Dispersion. Is there a time where dps can't occur due to movement, phase changes, talking about how this raid boss will destroy you unlike the other 10,000 raid bosses we've encountered? DISPERSE THEN if you have mana issues. If you don't have mana issues, save Dispersion for an "oh shit" button. Don't forget about "pre Fade". Learn your tanks. Learn if they need a small amount of time before they peak at maximum generating threat per second. Pre-fading and casting "all out" will result in a higher DPS than the antiquated "pause" or "3 second rule" between the tank's engagement and your own. Heavy movement fights: The "priority" system should change... your "instant casts" such as SW ![]() Check Your Raid Composition 3.3 - This section needs updated You should aim to complete this while haphazardly vomitting invites to the unkown: ***Buffs on Player*** 30% Inc. Cast Speed Bloodlust/Heroism - Shaman (all) 3% Inc. Damage Sanctified Retribution - Retadin Ferocious Inspiration - BM Hunter 3% Inc. Haste Improved Moonkin - Boomkin Swift Retribution - Retadin 5% Inc. Crit Elemental Oath - Ele Shaman Moonkin Aura - Boomkin 5% Inc. Haste Wrath of Air Totem - Shaman (all) Inc. Spell Power 280 - Totem of Wrath - Ele Shaman 10% - Demonic Pact - Demo Warlock 144 - Flametongue Totem - Shaman (all) ***Debuffs on Target*** 3% Inc. Crit Heart of the Crusador - Retadin (some Prot Pally) Totem of Wrath - Ele Shaman Master Poisoner - Assassin Rogue 5% Inc. Crit Improved Scorch - Fire Mage Improved Shadowbolt - Aff Lock (Destruction tree) Winter's Chill - Frost Mage 13% Inc. Damage Curse of Elements - Warlock (all) Earth and Moon - Boomkin Ebon Plaguebringer - Unholy DK 3% Inc. Hit Misery - Spriest Improved Faerie Fire - Moonkin 30% Inc. Devouring Plague Damage Crypt Fever - Unholy DK 6. More DPS Needed! Inner Focus: The spell is two components in one. The "mana savings" of the spell will work on all spells that cost mana. This consumes the buff and ends it's benefits. The "crit chance" only works on certain spells in our arsenal (in order of maximum crit benefit): 1. Mind Sear - crit chance applies to the entire channel, all 5 ticks. 2. Mind Flay - crit chance applies to the entire channel, all 3 ticks. 3. Mind Blast - crit chance applies to the spell. 4. Shadow Word: Death - crit chance applies to the spell. 5. Improved Devouring Plauge - crit chance applies ONLY to the "Improved" initial damage. Pre-pot! Pop a potion before entering combat. Ask your RL if you can have your tank count down before the pull (when possible). Pop a Wild Magic Potion when you hear the tank say "2". If you do pre-pot, weave your Shadowfiend into your opener for the 200 spell power bonus is a nice up-front load of damage done and increases the chances of getting an extra fiend into the fight at the end. Think of the fiend as a 4th DoT. Lustism, what to do? Casting "priority" no longer changes under lustism and remains the same as above: refresh those dots ON TIME. During bloodlust/heroism, it is more pseudo-power to NOT take a potion. Instead, pop a Potion of Speed during a period of the fight where lustism is not going to occur. Some fights require lustism to get passed a very difficult part, if this is the case, it would be less beneficial to you over the course of the whole fight, but more beneficial to the raid if you popped a Wild Magic potion during lustism. 3.3 When 4 piece Tier 10 bonus is acquired, MB should be dropped from the casting list during Bloodlust/Heroism for maximum DPS. 4+ mobs , begins the sweet spot where Mind Sear out does multi-dotting for maximum DPS. Mind Sear scales very well with gear, its use will only increase with better gear. Lower health mobs should just be MS'd down. Higher health mobs can see an even bigger increase to damage done if VT DoT's are spread around on the targets while Mind Searing. For 2-3 mobs: Multi-DOT!!! This can also decrease your DPS. The time to live on the secondary targets, the GCD's used to damage the secondary targets, and the ability (skill, latency, positioning, strategy employed by your raid, etc.) need to be examined as to whether or not multi-dotting will increase or decrease your dps. The generalized theory to Multi-Dotting: Choose a primary target. Choose secondary target(s). Keep VT, DP, SW ![]() ![]() 1. Cast MB every cooldown 2. Refresh VT without clipping on all targets 3. Refresh the one and only DP on the primary target 3. Cast MF on all targets before SW ![]() ****Note about Pain and Suffering**** Take note that the refresh of SW ![]() ![]() ![]() Aids to Multi-Dotting: Set a focus and use a modifier to cast on focus target. Dot Timers that track multiple targets are a great aid. Keybinding your Multi-Dot spells near one another with modifier's to cast on focus can help. Remember that depressing both left and right mouse buttons allows you to move forward, freeing your "keyboard" hand for casting. Keybinding, in general, over mouse clicking can be a great help. Dangers in Multi-Dotting (things to avoid): 1. DoT fall offs. If the gap between expire and refresh is constantly widening or exists across multiple targets, DPS can decrease below that of single target. 2. Positioning: Chasing the center between targets can get you killed. Careful... 3. Forgetting other priorities: Shadowfiend should be used every cooldown, this can be lost in the multi-tasking fiasco of multi-dotting. Quaff a Wild Magic during BL, don't stand in fire, etc... 7. Pain and Suffering Explained Below you can see general events that can occur during a boss encounter, somehow changing dps of Shadow Word: Pain. This post doesn’t tell you if it's worth (overall dps point of view) to recast ticking SW ![]() Table shows general situation, example of a spell that triggers it, if Pain and Suffering can handle the change and a small comment. If you feel busy during encounters to keep an eye on all the stuff, you may use Shadow Green Light addon. NO – You don't need to recast SW ![]() YES – You must recast SW ![]() Please note that crit part of Inner Focus doesn't work, has never worked and probably will never work with our DoTs. Imp. DP does benefit from IF, but we have better spells to use it with. Gear change + % crit gained through equip (on use effect)- YES Situation has significantly changed with Nevermelting Ice Crystal (Pit of Saron 5man heroic) which can be used for an extra 20% rolling crit chance for SW ![]() Changing weapons for better crit rating ( / ) - YES You have a staff with high amount of crit and MH + OH with haste, but higher spell power.Equip the staff, cast SW ![]() ![]() + spell power item proc (Flare of the Heavens) - NO Amount of spell power SW ![]() Buff on player + % spell damage (Shadow Weaving, Tricks of the Trade) - YES Well known and documented situation. The very reason why we have an opening sequence (More info). You should cast SW ![]() ![]() ![]() For Tricks of the Trade, you just need to synchronize with "your" rogue and cast SW ![]() + % critical strike chance (Moonkin Aura, crit part of Potion of Wild Magic) - YES Moonkin aura or Elemental Oath needs to be present on you while casting SW ![]() + Special stuff (Hodir's Storm Cloud) - NO No special comment needed. Shadowform - YES You need to be in Shadowform while casting SW ![]() Buff on boss + % spell damage taken (Leviathan encounter - System Shutdown, Mimiron – Magnetic Field, Icehowl's Staggered Daze) - NO No special comment needed. Debuff on player + % critical strike chance (Loatheb – Fungal Creep) – YES No special comment needed. + % damage done (Yogg-Saron - Sara's Fervor, Thaddius – Charges, Twin Val'kyrs - Light Essence - Dark Essence) – YES No special comment needed. Debuff on boss + % crit (Improved Scorch, Totem of Wrath) – YES You need to manualy recast SW ![]() + % damage taken (CoE, Ebon Plaguebringer, Earth and Moon) – NO No special comment needed. 8. Glyphs: There are 4 Glyphs that are interesting for you as a shadowpriest. 1. [Glyph of Shadow] 2. [Glyph of Shadow word Pain] 3. [Glyph of Mind flay] 4. [Glyph of Dispersion] [Glyph of Dispersion] should only be used when need for absorbing massive amounts of damage over a short period. For example [spell]Big Bang[/spell] from Algalon. 13. Gem's and Enchants. Gems: As shadow priest you use 3 type of gems: -[Runed Cardinal Ruby] ( Red ) -[Reckless Ametrine] ( Orange ) -[Purified Dreadstone] ( Purple ) In a red socket slot you always socket [Runed Cardinal Ruby]. In a yellow socket with at least 1 spell power bonus you socket [Reckless Ametrine] In a blue socket with at least 6 spellpower bonus you socket [Purified Dreadstone] Exception!: When you have enough crit/haste so you have an 100% uptime of "imp spirit tap" you can already socket [Purified Dreadstone] when the socket bonus is 5 or higher. The math for this exeption is: 12(Spell power)+((10 spirit * 1.1(Kings) * 1.1(Imp Spirit Tap) )+5(Bonus) Socket Example: You have an item that has one blue and one red socket slot and the Bonus is 7 Spell power. You socket [Purified Dreadstone] and [Runed Cardinal Ruby]. You have an item that has one blue and one yellow and a 7 spell power bonus. You socket [Purified Dreadstone] and [Reckless Ametrine]. You have an item with 2 yellow sockets and + 2 or more spell power. You socket 2* [Reckless Ametrine]. You have an item with 2 blue sockets and below 11 spell power bonus . You always socket 2 [Runed Cardinal Ruby]. Enchants: Slot Enchant Head [Arcanum of Burning Mysteries] Shoulder [Greater Inscription of the Storm] Cloak [spell]63765[/spell]-[Umhang - Großes Tempo]-[spell]55642[/spell] Chest [Enchant Chest - Super Stats] Bracer [Armschiene - Überragende Zaubermacht] Hands [Enchant Gloves - Exceptional Spellpower]-[spell]54999[/spell] Pants [spell]Brilliant Spellthread[/spell] Boots [spell]55016[/spell] - [Enchant Boots - Icewalker] Ring [spell]44636[/spell] Mainhand [Enchant Weapon - Mighty Spellpower]-[Enchant Weapon - Black Magic] Staff [Enchant Staff - Greater Spellpower] 14. Endgame Templates The endgame templates will be sorted after the average Item level counting from lowest to highest. BiS Ilevel 264 -Item level 264 represent 10 Man Heroic mode and 25 Man Normal Mode. BiS Ilevel 277 -Item level 277 represent 15 Man Heroic mode. |
