Breguet Classique Pair in Black Grand Feu Enamel
Elegant and distinct. *****
In traditional Breguet style, but with a twist, the Breguet Classique 5177 and Classique 7787 are variations of existing models, but get a high-contrast makeover with a black Grand Feu enamel dial and platinum case – an uncommon and eye-catching combination for a rather conservative brand.
While white enamel is the standard colour, Breguet has been adding colour to its enamel offerings in recent years, including the addition of blue enamel to the 5367 Tourbillon Ultra-Thin. In fact, the Classique 5177 already had a blue enamel dial a few years ago. However, the 5177 and 7787 are some of the most striking models due to their distinct hues. *****
While neither of these watches are new, they are both great looking pieces that embody the Breguet style but are slightly different. All of the stylistic elements are traditional Breguet, but the monochromatic colour scheme gives both watches a distinctly modern feel.
The 5177 is almost a perfect dress watch, but its date at three o'clock is a bit in the way. However, the date on a black dial is not as prominent as on a white dial.
The 7787 is more attractive (and more expensive), with an oversized power reserve display reminiscent of vintage Breguet pocket *****, and a moon phase that adds texture and color to the dial.
Black and Silver
Both the 5177 and 7787 feature the same black enamel dial and platinum case.
Platinum is relatively rare in the Breguet catalog, but this ***** uses platinum for the case and crown. The case is typical Breguet style, with narrow lugs and a fluted case band.
The dials are both black Grand Feu enamel, with silver-powder printed indices that appear grainy up close. The numerals are naturally Breguet-style, while the star-shaped minute track mimics the dials of 19th-century Breguet pocket watches.
The 5177 is perfectly sized for a dress *****, measuring 38mm wide by 8.8mm tall. Inside is the automatic 777 Q movement with a 55-hour power reserve and a silicon escapement and balance spring.
The 7787, on the other hand, features a dual simple complication. The traditional moon phase display is at 12 o'clock, although the power reserve is located outside the center and is larger. The moon display consists of a blue lacquered disc with a solid gold moon emblem that has been hammered to mimic the cratered surface of the moon.
The 7787 is slightly larger at 39 mm wide and 10.3 mm high, but still elegant. It is driven by the cal. 591 DRL, an automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve. The balance spring and escapement of the cal. 591 DRL are also made of silicon. *****
