Find a pre-raid BIS list for your class on wowhead. Theres some options for the items so make yourself a list of what heroic dungeons you want to run once you hit 80 to get the most value.
You will also get badges of heroism from heroic dungeons and some quests in Storm Peaks and Icecrown. You can trade those badges for some really nice items (think equivalent to 10man Naxx tier).
Also some of the items on the list can come from crafting, buying them off AH or farming rep. From looking at the pre-raid BiS make a decision which rep you need to farm, also consider that certain reps give BiS enchants, so those are a must to do. Most rep factions have a tabard, buy it at lvl80 and wear it while doing heroic dungeons - you will get a lot of rep with the faction this way. The only meaningful faction that doesn't have a tabard is Sons of Hodir - they have BiS shoulder enchant for dps. There is only 2 ways to get their rep to exalted: do dailies and you can also turn in Relics of Ulduar. Those drop off some random mobs in Storm Peaks. So potentially you can save a lot of time by wasting a lot of gold buying these relics of AH and turning them in. But if your not super rich I suggest do the dailies, it will take you couple of weeks to get the best enchant but you will make a ton of money in the process.
One great way to save time on 80 is to make these decision early on, look up faction rep guides on wowhead and start doing these quest chains that give you the rep that you need as soon as you hit the level requirement. Most of them you don't need to be 80. For example for Sons of Hodir you can head to Storm Peaks at 77 pick up a certain quest that sends you into a long quest chain. In the end you will unlock the Sons of Hodir faction and their daily quests. So at 77 you can already do their dailies, getting experience, ***** and saving yourself time once you hit 80. For Argent Crusade you can do their quests at about 75 in Zul'Drak and that also unlocks their daily quest.
But this is mostly relevant for Phase 1. Once Ulduar drops (supposedly in next couple of weeks) they are adding a Heroic + version to dungeons which will drop naxx10 gear. If those can be farmed easily then you probably don't have to worry much about getting geared, just do reps for the enchants that you need and spam Heroic+ dungeons.
